Creative drama by nature is meant to be geared toward the development of actors. This is different than theater which is meant to be performed. Our camp's structure is based upon creative drama with the added bonus of a performance at the end of the week. Throughout the week, young actors grow as they learn and practice dramatic skills such as improvisation and elements of stage presence. Preparing for the end-of-week performance gives young actors a venue to which they can apply their skills. A performance also lends a sense of energy and excitement to the week. The extensive costume room and backstage magic mesmerize our students year after year. To remain truer to philosophy of creative drama, we approach the performance through improvisation. rather than being tied to a script, we teach children to understand what their character needs to accomplish in a scene. Often, when a young actor forgets a memorized line or even a word from a script, they have difficulty moving forward in that scene. Improvisation, alternatievely, teaches actors to be flexible-- providing freedom to substitute different words for the same result. Every week is unique. No experience is necessary.
PARENTS--you asked, we listened. We are now offering an exciting new "Tween" camp and "young child" camp!!
FAQs:
Full day vs 1/2 day? The full day camp allows directors to work with children to a deeper level. For example, when learning improvistional skills, there is the ability to apply the newly learned skills to more spontaneous situations. With the extra hours, actors are given additional time and attention, and more time can be put toward the end-of-week performance.
What makes the "TWEEN" camp different? Given the age group, directors can go deeper with acting skills. The performance can often be more involved and the material can be more age-appropriate.
How will the camp be different for the 4-6 age group? The ration of director to actors will be smaller. Stage precautions (ledges) are put into strict effect. The skills and expectations are presented at an age-appropriate level for all of our age groups. Young children are actually quite natural at improvisation and creative thinking. They often have fewer inhibitions.
